Consultancy Skills Course

A process led approach

An essential course for people who work in or wish to work in a specific consultancy role, whether on a freelance basis or within an agency that supports organisational development.

This course is run in partnership with Caroline Cook. We are able to run the course for groups of up to 16 people. We are also able to offer an extended version of the course for agencies that wish to offer the course within a residential setting.

A three to four day course is available

Introduction

This course introduces participants to a broad range of issues concerned with the effective development, delivery and management of process-led consultancy. The course has been developed through drawing on the Progress experience of developing and delivering consultancy to a diverse range of voluntary, social and community sector groups. Consultancy is challenging both for the organisation and for the individual consultant delivering the work. We look at both the organisation and at you as a consultant and the parts you both take in the process. The course will provide a forum for discussion of this interaction, as well as an opportunity to think creatively about how to make the experience a positive one for all those involved. The course introduces a range of ideas, techniques and tools, and will ask participants to draw on their own experience and to think about how they might use these in practice.

Day 1

The first day is about getting clear about what we mean by process orientated consultancy, looking at what needs to be thought about in the setting up of the work and preparing for delivery. We also begin to work with you in the role of consultant and with the kinds of self awareness, skills and qualities that will be needed.

  • Setting up the work
  • You as part of the process
  • Preparing to deliver the work

Day 2

The second day introduces some key concepts that underpin the work with groups and organisations. The process of change, how you can support people to work with change and different responses to change will be covered.

  • Organisational dynamics
  • Group dynamics
  • The process of change

Day 3

The third day focuses on what you actually do in consultancy work and the way in which you manage yourself and all the relationships involved. We finish the course by exploring the need for definite endings and how reflective practice can help you to continue to develop professionally as a consultant.

  • Tools for consultancy
  • Managing yourself in the role
  • Managing relationships
  • Positive endings and reflective practice
